The Lakers’ misfortunes seem to have already begun, with superstar Anthony Davis spraining his right thumb during Saturday’s preseason game against the Nets in China.
Davis initially stayed in after swatting a ball midway through the first quarter, but ultimately returned to the locker room where he was ruled out of the 91-77 loss, the team announced.
The usually durable 26-year-old started at center as part of an ongoing lineup experiment, and finished with six points (2-of-7), three rebounds, two blocks and one steal in 12 minutes.
Davis was averaging 19 points (50 percent shooting), six rebounds, 3.5 assists and a block in parts of three preseason games.
The Lakers have not made the postseason since 2013, and gave up multiple unprotected first-round picks and a cast of young players to acquire the disgruntled star from the Pelicans this past offseason.
