Now that every self-respecting beauty buff has incorporated a super-luxe face oil into their daily quarantine routine, it’s time to lavish some skin-love from the neck down. The best body oils of 2020 make great Mother’s Day gifts and — let’s be honest — presents to ourselves.
Our favorite new offerings, powered by rare plant extracts and scented with exotic essential oils, hydrate parched limbs while providing a mood-elevating escape.
Taza Ayurveda’s Eladi Body Oil, peppered with out-there ingredients like skin-brightening crushed pearls and vitamin-enriched Snow Lotus sourced from India, comes with its own Mala meditation bead bracelet and book of mantras.
“We encourage using it as part of a sacred ritual,” says Taza Ayurveda co-founder Divya Viswanathan. “Lighting candles, lathering in oil, and relaxing the mind can be incredibly therapeutic after a long day.”
The Brooklyn-based brand Highborn also offers a range of aromatic body oils. Available both with and without CBD, they were designed to be emollient without an oily finish. “We’re such fans of both blends,” says founder and formulator Lauren Gannes. “It’s really elevated the mundane day-to-day into a ritual, kinda how we hoped it would.”
Cool and culty, the oils are offered in three scents: “Salome,” featuring rose otto and tulsi notes; “Moon Saber,” laced with blue tansy and neroli; and “Défumé,” redolent of sandalwood and the wildly trendy palo santo.
For cannabis superpower Lord Jones, skipping out on cannabidiol isn’t an option. The brand’s High CBD Body Oil is fueled by 100 mg of broad-spectrum, hemp-derived CBD oil, alongside skin-soothing avocado, safflower seed and jojoba oils. Packaged in a handy rollerball bottle, it can be massaged into pressure points and temples to help alleviate stress.
Inspired by a trip to Sicily and his own Italian-American roots, former ballet dancer turned esthetician Jordan Samuel Pacitti crafted his Olio Per Il Corpo body oil with nourishing Mediterranean staples such as olive and grapeseed oils, rosemary and tomato leaf extracts and citrusy dashes of lemon, lime and mandarin.
“We’re giving you, like, Old World, Italian wine-label vibes,” Pacitti says — holding a sleek Jordan Samuel Skin bottle up to the screen — in a hilarious, martini-fueled YouTube video he shot to launch the product. “The whole thing with the Italian lifestyle is that less is more. It’s about really high-quality ingredients, but maybe fewer of them.”
Although similarly minimalist Berlin Skin is made in the US, it was also inspired by European roots — this time, a German grandmother. The brand’s Black Spruce Body Oil is scented with a blend of frankincense, black spruce and blue tansy; it’s said to supply vitamin E and antioxidants to the skin via grapeseed and jojoba oils, and a sense of calm courtesy of rosewood essential oil.
Equal parts skin hydrators and aromatherapy experiences, this new crop of botanical-fueled, luxe body oils are the perfect gift for any stressed-out moms who need a temporary escape from coronavirus angst.
“We need to show our bodies a bit more love,” says Taza Ayurveda’s Viswanathan. “Especially during unsettling times.”
