China will deploy 1,400 medical personnel from the military to treat patients infected with the deadly coronavirus, according to reports.
President Xi Jinping ordered the military Sunday to begin airlifting hundreds of doctors and nurses, as well as 58 tons of medical supplies to the epicenter of the deadly virus, the Bangkok Post reported.
The medics will handle patients at the recently-completed Huoshenshan Hospital, which was built in a matter of days to specialize in the coronavirus, according to a report.
The hospital, which has 1,000 beds, will begin admitting patients Monday after the number of confirmed cases climbed above 14,000, the report said.
The medical staff will consist of 950 members from the People’s Liberation Army in addition to 450 people enrolled at medical universities for the armed services, state news agency Xinhua reported.
Chinese officials said the virus — which has no cure — has killed more than 300 people, mostly in the central Hubei province, where the outbreak originated last month.
