Presidential hopeful Michael Bloomberg touched off a social media debate on how to play with a dog on Tuesday after video emerged of him greeting a dog by shaking its snout at a campaign stop in Vermont.

The encounter between the former New York City mayor and the pooch was filmed Monday in Burlington and has gone viral on Twitter, with millions of users on the platform viewing the video.

The footage shows Bloomberg shake a man’s hand, then grab the dog by the muzzle and shake the pooch up and down.

After the snout-shake, Bloomberg scratches the top of the dog’s head. The dog wagged his tale throughout the episode.

Twitter users questioned Bloomberg’s canine handshake.

“That’s not how you do that,” said one.

Another wrote: “Oh please, he shook the dogs snout. That is not normal.”

Others said his canine shake shows he’s friendly with man’s best friend.

“It shows he’s comfortable with dogs,” a woman said.

“In his defense I frequently do a handshake with my dog’s snout,” added another Twitter user.

Stu Loeser, a Bloomberg spokesman, told Fox News, “Mike plays with his dogs, he plays with his kids’ dogs, and this video shows him playing with a voter’s dog as he became the first candidate to campaign in every Super Tuesday state.”
