Seven members of the same family were killed in a mass murder-suicide in North Carolina, authorities said Monday.

The victims were found shot dead in a cluster of three homes on the same property in Moncure Sunday evening, according to the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.

A teenage boy hiding in a bedroom closet had called 911 to report a gunman in his house, WRAL News reported.

The shooter was identified as 66-year-old Larry Ray by the outlet, with a relative saying that Ray shot six family members, including his wife, and then himself.

They were identified as: Helen Mason, 93; Ellis Mansfield, 73; Jeanie Ray, 67; Lisa Mansfield, 54; John Paul Sanderford, 41; and Nicole Sanderford, 39.

Relatives said they don’t know what sparked the attack.

“To lose any family member is devastating, but to lose several at once to unexpected violence is unimaginable,” said Sheriff Mike Roberson.
