Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s conservative challenger railed into him at a debate Monday, calling him a “fraud” for appearing in blackface years ago at a costume party.

Trudeau’s rival in the country’s prime minister race, Andrew Scheer, immediately brought up the blackface scandal on the debate stage.

“Mr. Trudeau, you’re a phony and you’re a fraud and you do not deserve to govern this country,” Scheer said.

“He can’t even remember how many times he put blackface on, because the fact of the matter is he’s always wearing a mask,” Scheer added.

A photograph revealed by Time Magazine last month showed Trudeau wearing blackface while dressed as the Disney character Alladdin at an “Arabian nights” themed party when he was 29.

Trudeau admitted that he wore blackface prior to that during a performance in high school. He then said he couldn’t be sure how many times he had darkened his face.

At the debate Monday, Trudeau accused Scheer of hiding his conservative platform and compared him to unpopular conservative lawmaker Doug Ford.

“You’re choosing, just like Doug Ford did, to hide your platform from Canadians and deliver cuts to services and cut taxes for the wealthiest,” Trudeau said.

Canadians head to the polls for the election on Oct. 21.
